Quartz Surfaces - Even Better Than Granite Posted By : Dawn Bamber

Post Date: 2010-11-04 Quartz surfaces have been gaining in popularity even at the expense of granite, which is seen as one of the best marble alternatives out there. Quartz is extremely non-porous and stain resistant, as well as chip- and scratch-resistant. Most people wouldn't believe that there is another type of surface that is as good as marble or granite when it comes to these areas, but it's true. The surfaces are made from a mixture that is about 93% quartz and 7% resin. The quartz is pulverised and then the resin is mixed in, along with any pigments used to give the surface a colour. The mixture is then put into a mould already measured out to the exact size needed for a worktop, so extra cutting or sealing is necessary.

While granite is non-porous, it must be sealed every few years. You can still simple wipe it down with a sponge and it'll look great for a very long time, but to ensure its beauty and to fully maximise its stain-resistant potential, sealing it is strongly recommended. Quartz surfaces, on the other hand, don't need to be sealed. You can prepare food on it years from now the same way you can on the first day it enters your house. Since they're non-porous, quartz and granite are both resistant to germs and bacteria, provided you use the proper antibacterial spray on top of them. However, granite must be sealed in order to be completely food-safe.

Quartz has other qualities that outperform granite. It's costs less to maintain a quartz surface than a granite one over time. While it's easy to clean on both surfaces, quartz is more resistant to household chemicals, acids and solvents. Granite is chip-resistant, but since it's still made of rock, chipping and cracking is possible; quartz has no such problems. Finally, in terms of pure aesthetics, granite worktops are absolutely beautiful and stay that way with very little effort. Quartz surfaces are just as low-maintenance, more sanitary, and match other kitchen countertops perfectly.

If you're thinking of getting a quartz worktop for your kitchen, it's not such a bad idea. Quartz looks great and cleans in a snap. Also, it's just as economical as granite in that it has the same attributes that makes marble so great, but it doesn't have the high price tag associated with marble. Quartz surfaces can be an attractive option for those who want a good looking kitchen without spending a lot of money on it.
